When a couple grows old together, they have each other. They have their identity and shared memories, tasks to do and goals to strive for. When their lifelong partner dies, the world changes. They change. The widowers and widows start to depend on their adult children and grandchildren to brighten and give meaning to their lives. My mother has been a widow going on 10 years. My wonderful mother is 94, lives on her own in Fortuna, California and is physician certified, "sharp as a tack." My sister Doris, who lives in the same community, looks after her. This summer she has been visiting her children in Utah A Mother's Love Never Ceases (January 2000)
This article is about Dr. Frmer's mother who died at age 98 after a long a fruitful life. Dr. Farmer shares his observatons of his mother's life. Many of her characteristics endeared her to her children and grandchildren even though she lived to an advanced age. Her legacy of love carries on into the next generations.
